Cool sweater - conscious choices
The world's clothing system is simply not working. Fast fashion is filling New Zealand landfills. Over 80% of the world's water is contaminated with micro plastics – 30% of which comes from clothing. It is time to make better choices.
The Devold Original sweaters come from an era when things were made to last. A century ago very few had the means to purchase a new sweater, suit or dress for every season. The idea behind the craftsmanship and the design was to create garments that could last a lifetime. We are still true to this idea. We make the sweater, you bring it to life. Devold is built for life.
The fabric of the sweaters, 100% Norwegian wool, is one of the most sustainable materials in the world and corresponds perfectly with the demand to reduce the emissions of microplastic. The future depends on us to be conscious, the purpose behind garment matters as much as the look of it.
The environment did not trouble our ancestors, but their way of life was all about low consumption, harvesting from nature and caring for their surroundings. Every thread of the Devold Originals Collection is knitted with this heritage in mind. Every sweater is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship – and a gift to pass on to future generations.
Stay original.
The most iconic Norwegian wool sweater
Devold’s Nordsjø sweater is made of 100% pure new wool, making it naturally insulating, wicking and breathable. Originally made for fishermen and worker in the harsh climate on the Norwegian coast. Layered under a jacket or worn on its own, this chunky wool sweater will keep you warm in the coldest weather without overheating.
With its distinctive chevron check pattern, it can be considered the original Norwegian sweater, recognisable around the world in many variations, including the version that L.L. Bean turned into an icon of American preppy and Ivy style.

The original islender
The Islender’s timeless design originally came from mothers, daughters and girlfriends all along the coastline of Norway, making a sturdy sweater for the fishermen in their families. Any pattern on a knitted sweater means thicker and warmer layers. Because of the number of threads, the type of wool and the special knitting technique, the Islender became like a shield against the forces of nature.
This hardcore sweater was made with a tough surface, making it ruthless against water and hard to break down. The first Devold Islender was knitted in the 1850s.

Blaatrøie – style and function combined
One of the very first designs made by Ole Andreas Devold himself was inspired by a selection of elegant and dependable sweaters, showcased in an 1851 industrial exhibition in London. Here, Devold saw a knitting machine for the first time. He brought the idea of ”the blue shirt” home, and in the mid-1860s Blaatrøie®, as it would be called, was born. With an especially tight-knitting technique as well as being water repellent, it became a piece ‘every self-respecting fisherman’ would own. It was said you only needed to buy one of these blue wonders in your lifetime. This is true to this day.
The Devold Originals collection
Devold® Originals are warm and traditional sweaters made from 100 % pure new wool from Norwegian sheep. These sweaters are the foundation of our history and have been rediscovered by modern adventurers, who make conscious choices when buying garments. Sustainability, care for nature and animals, unbeatable insulation and style corresponds perfectly in these sweaters.
Originally made for fishermen and other workers in the harsh climate along the Norwegian coast; Now we present a new and more contemporary look by combining the old patterns and textiles with new colours and shapes. Still made to last a lifetime.
